Ah Monday. Hello. How was your weekend? Hope you managed to get down to Latimer Square on Friday for the 198 Hereford Youth Health Centre rally, Spanky was there MCing with loca MPs MP’ing. And today at 12:15pm is the Ecan rally at Victoria Park against Wyatt Creech becoming the man who’s going to be looking after our water, even though he’s known for being involved with “a dairy company with 12 convictions for breaching the Resource Management Act in the past three years”. So, yeah.
We had a chat with Felix Griffin who is a college student in New Plymouth, trying to organise a zombie walk in the CBD. I filmed a little short film with my mate Sam when I lived in Auckland which incorporated a zombie walk that happened there, it was scary. SPITROAST! and the Zombies
First up on the show this morning we had the lovely Jacinta Hawkins from AUT who’s been looking at the effect of reality TV shows on kids’ outlook on junk food. Show’s such as The Biggest Loser and Downsize Me seem to have well, some frightened children into cutting back on the lollies as they don’t like those fatties ridiculed on the small screen. Have a listen to the interview here:
Next up, you may have heard of a baby Orca that scienticians have had the rare opportunity to slice up and study? Well it’s at Te Papa and a specialist from Canadia was flown over to wield the scalpel, we spoke to Anton van Helden who the marine mammals collection manager at Te Papa about what it was like being up close and personal with an Orca of this age and what the learned from it.
Hey Friday. Thanks for joining us this week, it’s been a doozy and we’ve actually had the most emails we’ve ever had, so cheers for sending them in, keep ‘em coming cause we want more!
We’ve been talking a lot about Ecan lately with the whole water quality debarcle, but this morning we spoke with Ecan’s air portfolio chair; Sir Kerry Burke about the Clean Heat Project. Did you know it’s been going since 2003? First off, we found out whether Sir Kerry had big aspirations as a kid about being knighted, then we busted some balls about open fires in Christchurch and when or if you can use them (coal ranges are OK in summer, wtf?) and we discussed the nostalgia of a roaring log fire and cooking toast on big forks, then sprinting to bed because the rest of the house is freezing. AND what can you expect from your landlord in the way of proper heating when there’s no big ass fire.
Chris Gallavin is a criminal and international lawyer. He came into the studio this morning to talk about how the Waihopai 3 managed to get off scott free and what impact this may have on our justice system, well, what issues it addresses, as a jury won’t have any effect on precedence. Chris is great because each time he visits us he brings the rain on RDU as a privately owned entity, and then launches into a quasi self interview. Is this all a case of belief vs hope? This interview will clear it all up for you:
Chef Jonny Schwass is putting on an awesome event this weekend on Sunday - a Tomato Festival. Held in the garden patch that grows most of Restaurant Schwass’ veges, it will be an afternoon to pay homage to this delicious, bright red fruit, hell there might even be a La Tomatinaesque tomato fight if you’re lucky. I think they have about 10 tickets left so be sure to drop by 190 Ferry Rd or give Jonny a call at the restaurant on 379 1333. With 15 different varieties of toms on site, you’ll be spoilt for choice and just think how cool it will be to pick them straight off the vine…
And finally on the show this morning, a bit of a surprise, we had a chat with Martin Stacey who is one of New Zealand’s top hot air balloonists. There’s a big fiesta going on up in the Wairarapa currently, so we wanted to find out a bit more on this sport. How do you steer one? How safe are they? Could you shoot one down? And who makes those wicker baskets? All your hot air ballooning questions are answered here:
How was your St. Patrick’s Day yesterday? I managed to head down town for a sneaky pint o Guinness with me mate Sam, was good. We were out early enough not to be amidst the general melee that usually flares up early afternoon which was a good thing. I did see a few inflatable hats with flashing lights I wanted to snag but alas, a street fight would’ve ensued.
How’s your head? I’m talking to the men here, are you all good mental like? Wairarapa suicide prevention coordinator Barry Taylor is organising a conference in Masterton only for dudes with only dude speakers, which ruffled a few feathers but generally went down well with the ladies. No human rights issues are being breached so fret not if you’re getting that little squirt of equality, you can rest easy. It’s all about the mental health of New Zealand men which can be easily overlooked so let’s ease up on the macho and get your head right.
We were lucky enough to have a chat with Graham Cameron who is the spokesperson for the Waihopai 3 who have just been aquitted of breaking into the spy base and slashing one of those big inflatable bubbles surrounding a satellite dish. We found out how their partying is going, the court case, if it was actually a surprise to get off the charges and what’s nextr. Have a listen:
Hands up who actually knows what’s going on with Ecan? Well we’re not really up to speed and thought it about time to get learned, so our very own scientician/atheistologan James Dann came into the studio to explain the situtation. If you can work out the main gist of it through the hearsay and bias opinion you can kind of work out what’s happening at Environment Canterbury. Ha, love you James!
And finally on the show, Maria Walls made it just in time to preview a flick that’s coming up on Sky’s Rialto Channel called A Film With Me In It. Check out the trailer below and have a listen to Maria’s preview here:
Firstly let me say, happy St. Pat’s Day to ya’ll! Is it slightly racist? Most Irish have a good sense of humour and don’t think so, we could learn a lot from the Irish.
Mostly when we try for interviews we go for the big hitters, the people who will be able to answer our questions with some authority rather than the all too familiar line “ahh, you’ll have to ask (insert anyone else’s name here) about that”. We thought we’d landed the mac when we got hold of Fran McGrath; Deputy Director of Public Health from the Ministry of Health to talk about that contaminated land in Mapua which is now having a park made on top of it. The TDC asked the MOH to produce a report about the level of toxidity (and more) of the site, and it came back with something like the results showed it was fairly certain there’s probably not much risk of long term health problems. Convinced? Neither are we. Have a listen to the MOH interview which kind of gives us some sort of answers.
We caught up with Te Radar this morning, really wanted to hear about that Tequila he checked out up in the Golden Bay, but unfortunately it’s still fermenting, just sitting there looking all “fermenty”. Also on the agenda was home/mobile irrigation systems, seeing as we love talking about water distribution so much here in Christchurch, and we found out a little bit about Radar’s comedy ethos - turns out he’s on to a winner: entertainment AND education. God I wish they had that when I was at school.
Thanks for tuning in this morning, and for all your feedback - keeping us honest! We love that. Catch you tomorrow, when we’ll be getting to the bottom of the Ecan debarcle. Gritty stuff.
Morning! Down to business - 198 Hereford Youth Health Centre need $90,000 to keep their doors open to the youth of Christchurch who need to see a doc for whatever reason. To help raise awareness about their plight, and hopefully get some local MPs on board 198 are holding a rally in Latimer Square this Friday from 12pm to 2pm, MCed by our very own BWS host Spanky Moore. Do get down their and show your support, I’m sure they’ll be taking donations too, 90K probably wouldn’t be hard to scrape together for some people with the means.
We spoke with Bob Parker this morning, predominantly about the 198 Hereford Youth Health Centre, he didn’t see it to be the Council’s responsibility to shell out funding to bail them out - that would dip into the pocket of Canterbury rate payers. But aren’t the sons and daughters of the rate payers using the 198 service? Also covered was eCan’s debacle, is this all happening just because they won’t take on the irrigation scheme? Find out here:
We also busted the balls of Phil Goff who knew what’s going on with 198 Hereford as well, he told us Labour would be putting the pressure on the government to sort out some funding to the local health board. Hear his side of the story:
Christina Guerrero is from Chile, we spoke to her this morning because she’s organising a fundraiser for the victims of the earthquake that shook her home land 3 weeks ago. In light of the Haitian earthquake, we found out what’s going on over there, what they need. The fundraiser is at the Ngaio Marsh theatre on the 24th March, tickets are $25 so make sure you support this one too! Thanks Christina, next time we’ll get a rendition of the Chilean national anthem for sure
And lastly, it’s St. Patrick’s Day tomorrow and what would St. Patrick’s Day eve be without Christchurch’s very own Black Velvet Band in studio for a live to air. The lads are missioning it up to Welly tomorrow morning for gigs there, then back to the 03 for more rocking in the afternoon and evening, I pity their fingers. Anyhoo, have a listen to their interview/live to air from this morning and have yourself a jig!
Cheers for tuning in as always, if you like the show, tell your mates. Don’t forget all RDU prizes won on the BWS and any other show are now to be picked up from Real Groovy on Tuam street, so make sure you head that way and while you’re there, check out there amazing vinyl collection!
